This suspension bridge will be built in a mountainous region nearby the town of Metsovo in Greece. With a span of 547.5 m, passing over a deep valley, it connects two tunnels. The twin deck has an overall width of 23.6 m and is suspended on an inclined hanger system with main cables directly anchored in the hillsides.
Wind tunnel tests were conducted on a 1:5000 and 1:400 scale models to capture the topography effects on the wind climate. A 1:40 scale sectional model of the bridge deck was tested in order to determine the flutter onset speed and identify the potential for vortex excitation. Static force and moment coefficients were measured for derivation of wind loads on the bridge. Conditions without traffic and with congested traffic present on the bridge were investigated. Loads due to strong winds were derived using theoretical methods.
